World health report 2013: research for universal health coverage.

Overview Universal health coverage ensures everyone has access to the health services they need without suffering financial hardship as a result. In December 2012, a UN resolution was passed encouraging governments to move towards providing universal access to affordable and quality health care services. As countries move towards it, common challenges are emerging -- challenges to which research can help provide answers. The World health report: research for universal health coverage focuses on the importance of research in advancing progress towards universal health coverage. In addition, it identifies the benefits of increased investment in health research by low- and middle-income countries using case studies from around the world, and proposes ways to further strengthen this type of research.

Health Services Research Spending and Healthcare System Impact

The challenges associated with translating health services and policy research evidence into practice are many and long-standing. Indeed, those challenges have themselves spawned new areas of research, including knowledge translation and implementation science. These sub-disciplines have increase our understanding of the critical success factors associated with the uptake of research evidence into (system) practice. In that regard, building on Canada´s recent Strategy for Patient Oriented Research would seem to offer consideravle promise. The "modest" proposals offered by Thakkar and Sulivan seem less likely to bear fruit. 

Public involvement in health research systems: a governance framework

Growing interest in public involvement in health research has led to organisational and policy change. Additionally, an emerging body of policy-oriented scholarship has begun to identify the organisational and network arrangements that shape public involvement activity. Such developments suggest the need to clearly conceptualise and characterise public involvement in health research in terms of governance.

Impact assessment of Iran’s health technology assessment programme

The present article aims to introduce an integrative RIH framework drawing on the RRI literature, the international literature on health systems as well as specific bodies of knowledge that shed light on key dimensions of health innovations. Combining inductive and deductive theory-building strategies and concomitant with the development of a formal tool to assess the responsibility of innovations, it developed a framework that is comprised of nine dimensions organised within five value domains, namely population health, health system, economic, organisational and environmental. RIH provides health and innovation policy-makers with a common framework that supports the development of innovations that can tackle significant system-level challenges, including sustainability and equity.

How Equity-Oriented Health Care Affects Health: Key Mechanisms and Implications for Primary Health Care Practice and Policy

Significant attention has been directed toward addressing health inequities at the population health and systems levels, yet little progress has been made in identifying approaches to reduce health inequities through clinical care, particularly in a primary health care context. Although the provision of equity?oriented health care (EOHC) is widely assumed to lead to improvements in patients’ health outcomes, little empirical evidence supports this claim. To remedy this, this study tested whether more EOHC predicts more positive patient health outcomes and identified selected mediators of this relationship

A conceptual framework for capacity strengthening of health research in conflict: the case of the Middle East and North Africa region

In conflict settings, research capacities have often been de-prioritized as resources are diverted to emergency needs, such as addressing elevated morbidity, mortality and health system challenges directly and/or indirectly associated to war. This has had an adverse long-term impact in such protracted conflicts such as those found in the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA), where research knowledge and skills have often been compromised. This paper proposes a conceptual framework for health research capacity strengthening that adapts existing models and frameworks in low- and middle-income countries and uses the knowledge of the MENA context to contextualise them for conflict settings.

Assessment of the public-private-partnerships model of a national health insurance scheme in India

A single hospital admission can deplete household resources so considerably as to induce impoverishment, especially in the Indian context of low government healthcare expenditure. Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) was a national health insurance scheme for below-poverty-line Indian families, to provide improved access to hospitalization and greater financial protection via a public-private-partnership employing private sector implementation capacity. Study objectives were to understand governance (including regulatory) environment and contract arrangements; evaluate expansion of services to beneficiaries; and assess compliance of providers and user satisfaction.

Global Conference on Person-Centre Care: Knowledge(s) and Innovation for Health in Changing Societies

Welcome to the first Global Conference on Person-Centred Care, that will take place in Gothenburg, Sweden, from 14-16 May, 2024.

The conference will platform explorations and accounts of person-centred care as related to several interdisciplinary and interprofessional fields, including integrated care, comprehensive care, and personalised health founded on partnerships, transcending healthcare practices and organisations, as well as policy and structural levels.
